The Island of La Maddalena - History
While numerous sites demonstrate that the presence of man here in prehistoric times, and then during the roman period and the Middle Age, the foundation of the town of La Maddalena is connected to the annexation of Sardinia on the part of the House of Savoy rulers from Piedmont in early XVIII century.
In 1767 the Savoyards arrived to the island, and three years later the first nucleus of the present-day town was founded. During the XIX century the town grew thanks to the construction of major military fortifications, which protected La Maddalena from invasions and attacks, and also to the exploitation of the granite quarries.
